The GICS "Materials" sector comprises companies that are active in the production, processing or refinement of raw materials. Yes, as a rule - but not automatically. The responsible classification institutes (e.g. MSCI and S&P for GICS) regularly check the relevance and consistency of the classifications. If there is a significant change in a company's sales or profit profile, it may be reclassified to a different industry or even a different sector. This usually takes place after fixed review cycles or upon request.

How is it ensured that a company is correctly categorized if it is active in several business areas?
The categorization is based on the dominant sales segment. If a company is active in several sectors but generates 70% of its turnover with chemical products, for example, it is assigned to the GICS sector "Materials" - even if it also has activities in the energy or transportation sector. In borderline cases, additional qualitative assessment criteria apply.
